Founded in 2020 by Dr. Emmanuel Adeyemi, Accu Care Foundation Hospital began as a modest 20-bed clinic in the heart of the city, driven by a singular vision: that every person, regardless of circumstance, deserves dignified, expert medical care.
Over four decades, we have grown into the region's premier tertiary referral centre, operating 450 beds across 18 clinical departments, and serving over 120,000 patients annually. Our growth has always been guided by the values of our founder — integrity, excellence, and humanity.
Today, Meridian stands as an accredited Centre of Excellence, home to sub-specialty units in cardiac surgery, neuroscience, oncology, and neonatal intensive care — none of which existed within 200 km when we first opened our doors.
The hospital opens with 20 beds and 4 doctors, offering primary care and maternity services to the local community.
A dedicated operating theatre is commissioned, enabling general surgery and caesarean sections for the first time.
A major capital project expands capacity and introduces specialist departments including cardiology and nephrology.
Meridian becomes one of only 12 hospitals in the country to receive full tertiary care accreditation from the National Health Commission.
The Adeyemi Cancer Institute opens, offering chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgical oncology under one roof.
Meridian leads the region's pandemic response, operating 80-bed isolation wards and administering over 50,000 vaccines.
State-of-the-art cardiovascular centre and the region's first robotic surgical system are inaugurated.
Dr. Emmanuel Adeyemi was born in 1943 in Abeokuta, Ogun State. After completing his medical training at the University of Lagos and a fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons in London, he returned to Nigeria with a singular purpose: to build a hospital that would not merely treat illness but restore human dignity.
In 1978, with personal savings and a bank loan, he opened the doors of what was then called Adeyemi Medical Clinic. His philosophy was simple: "A patient's life is not a case number." This belief permeated every protocol, every hiring decision, every architectural choice he made over the next 30 years. Dr. Adeyemi retired in 2008 as Chairman Emeritus, but his philosophy remains the heartbeat of Meridian today.
He holds honorary doctorates from three Nigerian universities and was awarded the National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 2005.
Professor Adaeze Nwosu-Okafor is a distinguished Consultant Physician and Cardiologist with over 25 years of clinical and academic experience. She holds an MBBS from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; an FWACP (Fellow of the West African College of Physicians); and a research doctorate from the University of Nottingham, UK.
Appointed CMD in 2018, Prof. Nwosu-Okafor has overseen the hospital's most ambitious expansion in history — the ₦4.2 billion Cardiac Wing, the introduction of robotic surgery, and a digital health transformation that reduced patient wait times by 47%.
Beyond clinical leadership, she chairs the National Taskforce on Maternal Mortality Reduction and sits on the WHO's Africa Regional Advisory Panel. In 2023, she was named one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in Health.
To provide accessible, compassionate, and evidence-based healthcare that improves the lives of individuals and strengthens the communities we serve.
